What is authentic leadership?

We often use the word authentic leadership without quite putting into words what it is. Often it is associated with being oneself and not wearing a mask when in public space. According to John Mattone, recognized as one of the world's leading authorities in leadership, it has to do with various elements.

The authentic leader is aware of his own strengths and weaknesses and dares to show these to the outside world, because without character you have nothing. The leaders who know how to get the most out of their own strengths, who are aware of their own weaknesses, are the leaders who are described as most authentic. Those weaknesses suddenly become your strength when you dare to acknowledge and stand by them and at the same time your strengths become more credible.

According to John Mattone, there are basically three types of leaders; Those who lead from their head, heart and/or gut.

According to John Mattone, there are basically three types of leaders; Those who lead from their head, heart and/or gut.

Lead from the head

The people who lead from their heads have the ability to think clearly and get the tasks done. These leaders have the ability to get teams to perform at a very high level.

The three subcategories of this type of leader are:

1. Thinkers who are good problem solvers, who, however, can be indecisive.

2. Disciples who are loyal and trustworthy but sometimes hesitant to act independently.

3. Activists who have a positive outlook on life, but may use activism to distance themselves from, for example, pain.

Lead from the heart

If you are leading from your heart, then you understand that your emotions can be both your greatest strength and your greatest weakness.

The three subcategories of this type of leader are:

1. Helpers who are empathetic and good at dealing with conflicts.

2. Entertainers who are charismatic and perfect, whose style and content are unique.

3. Artists who are creative and innovative, but risk being too self-centered.

Lead from the gut

If you are leading from the gut, then you are very committed to your surroundings. This type of leader is good at making deals with others as they are good at finding common interests.

The three subcategories of this type of leader are:

1. Drivers who are the leaders who get things done but can be overconfident.

2. Arbitrators who are good at finding common interests in the midst of deep conflicts.

3. Perfectionists who can achieve huge results, but who can also be too critical and ultimately push colleagues away.

Are you aware of your type of leader?

It is important to know what leader you are as well as what level of maturity you are at, as it is this level that is crucial to whether you are a truly authentic leader. By maturity is meant whether you fully understand your strengths and weaknesses as well as thought patterns. Thought patterns that can either derail or develop you. Thought patterns such as:

    • Critical thinking, by seeing the situation from several points of view
    • Practical thinking, by translating ideas into action so that you manage to reach goals
    • Inspirational thinking that can bring talent to all team members
    • Integrative thinking that can understand the abstract and challenging
    • Inventive thinking that can create new and think out of the box
    • Intuitive thinking that can make use of gut feelings when it makes sense
